About The Performance

2019 is the centenary of one of the greatest moments of aviation history and a truly British First – the first ever non-stop flight across the Atlantic.

The nail-biting, side-splitting true story of this daredevil flight by pilot Capt. John Alcock and navigator Lt. Arthur Whitten Brown is told in the hit stage play ‘Those Magnificent Men’ by acclaimed writing duo Mitchell & Nixon, originally produced by New Perspectives Theatre Company in 2010/2011 and revived in 2015 by The Foundry Group. In the tiny open cockpit of a converted Vickers biplane, the British airmen flew from Newfoundland through dense fog, sleet, snow and hail – sometimes upside down – to Ireland and worldwide celebrity.

To commemorate this centenary, the Foundry Group is once more reviving its highly popular production, starring Radio 4 regular David Mounfield (‘Count Arthur Strong’s Radio Show’) and writer/performer Brian Mitchell (‘The Ministry of Biscuits’) who endeavour to tell the epic tale with just cardboard, two stools and some left-over props.

So strap yourself in and cry “Chocks away!” for a night of thrills, spills and uproarious comedy.

Recent reviews from Leicester Comedy Festival, and some audience comments from the first three shows on this tour.

Sally Ann Dyer‎ – “We had a fab evening watching Those Magnificent Men on Saturday in Leicester! Brian and David were hilarious, the whole show extraordinary, clever, funny & educational about Alcock and Browns non-stop TransAtlantic flight 100 years ago. Having been to the bog near Clifden it was great to hear how they got there 😊 ”

Sally Ann Dyer – “It’s a fitting tribute! I hope they line the streets for you 😉 ”

Martin Dyer – “An hilarious evening at Upstairs at the Western. And all for three shillings and ninepence. Their recreation of the Vickers Vimy B2 was startlingly accurate – absolutely no expense had been spared – although the exhaust on the starboard engine did look a bit dodgy. A wonderful reminder of what it means to be English. I would go to watch this time and time again, if I could. Thank you gentlemen, thank you. Bravo! Watch out Clifden here come Those Magnificent Men! ”

Julie Foster – “Just watched this at The upstairs at the Western fantastic show. Wasn’t expecting much but you held my attention and made me laugh. I also learned some history. Thank you ”
